Barbra Streisand receives a lifetime achievement award, and “The Bear” wins big in the TV comedy category.(SAGA AWARDS 2024 WINNER LIST USA)
At the 30th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards on Saturday, Barbra Streisand accepted her lifetime achievement award with what appeared to be an awareness of the state of the world today. “Now I dream of a world where such prejudice is a thing of the past,” she remarked, pointing out that those who fled antisemitism in Eastern Europe, such studio leaders Samuel Goldwyn and Louis B. Mayer, helped build Hollywood.
The actress, singer, and filmmaker, however, primarily spoke about her passion for movies. She reminisced warmly about her childhood moviegoing experiences in Brooklyn and how she saw her first love, Marlon Brando, in “Guys and Dolls” at a theater close to Erasmus Hall High School. Not like reality, she explained, “that make-believe world was much more pleasant than anything I experienced.” “I desired to appear in motion pictures.”
She later claimed that as a working actress, the director William Wyler and the cinematographer Harry Stradling of her debut movie, 1968’s “Funny Girl,” established the tone for her career. She said, “They had no issue with opinionated young women.”
Da’Vine Joy Randolph (“The Holdovers”) and Robert Downey Jr. (“Oppenheimer”) took home prizes for their supporting performances in motion pictures. “The Bear” dominated the comedy category for television, winning awards for best ensemble and best actor and actress for Ayo Edebiri and Jeremy Allen White. As the winners are declared, we’ll keep you informed.
