The Ashikaga Shogunate, which succeeded the Kamakura Shogunate, saw a shift in power from the shogunate to the emperor during the Muromachi Period. This era was marked by internal conflict and the rise of daimyos, or regional lords, who sometimes challenged the authority of the shogunate.
The Sengoku Period and the End of the Shogunate
The Sengoku Period, a time of widespread conflict and social change, saw the decline of the Ashikaga Shogunate and the emergence of powerful daimyos. Regional warlords fought for control, leading to a fragmented political landscape until the unification by Oda Nobunaga, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, and Tokugawa Ieyasu.
The Tokugawa Shogunate and National Isolation
The Tokugawa Shogunate, established after the unification of Japan, enacted a policy of national isolation, known as Sakoku. This period saw a stable, yet isolated, Japan with a feudal social structure.
