With “Poor Things,” Emma Stone unexpectedly won the Oscar for best actress, marking her second career triumph in the field.

On Sunday night, she defeated Lily Gladstone of “Killers of the Flower Moon” in a race that most commentators believed was too close to call. The first Native American to win an Oscar in a competitive field would have been Gladstone.

When Michelle Yeoh, the winner from the previous year, announced her name, Stone seemed surprised. Before going into the aisle to embrace director Yorgos Lanthimos and co-star Mark Ruffalo, she gave her husband, Dave McCary, a hug and a kiss.

She remarked backstage, “I think I blacked out.” Yes, I was taken aback. I still have a slight spinning sensation.

Stone gave hugs to the five former winners of the Best Actress award who had presented the candidates.

Stone received recognition for her outstanding portrayal of Bella Baxter, a naive lady in Victorian London who has a brain transplant and embarks on a self-discovery quest. The movie has a lot of dark humor set against a steampunk aesthetic.

As Stone entered the stage, she indicated to the audience that her dress was broken by pointing to its back. Repairs had been completed by the time she returned to the platform to talk with the journalists.

She remarked, “It was wonderful that they sewed me back in.” “I really believe that I failed during ‘I’m Just Ken,'” she remarked, alluding to the actor Ryan Gosling’s original song nomination. “Ryan really amazed me, and that number was incredible.”

Stone is the thirteenth female winner of two Oscars for best actress. She made her debut in the love musical “La La Land” in 2017. In both 2015 and 2019, she received nominations for supporting actress.

She was also a nominee this year for Best Picture for directing “Poor Things,” which was defeated by “Oppenheimer.” She was the second female nominee for best picture and acting for the same movie, following Frances McDormand, who won both awards for “Nomadland” in 2021.

Before facing up for the Oscar, Stone and Gladstone exchanged victories. Gladstone won at the Screen Actors Guild Awards and in a different category at the Globes, while Stone won at the BAFTA Film Awards and the Golden Globes.

2010 saw Stone’s breakthrough performance in the teen comedy “Easy A.” The 35-year-old Scottsdale, Arizona native went on to play significant parts in films such as “The Help,” “Birdman,” “The Battle of the Sexes,” “The Favourite,” and several “Spider-Man” flicks.

The other nominations for leading actress were Carey Mulligan for “Maestro,” Sandra Hüller for “Anatomy of a Fall,” and Annette Bening for “Nyad.”
